We believe that a good fencing sword should last you a lifetime or longer, forming a part of your legend and winning you plenty of fun along the way.

In practice, however, there are a number of small issues that can lead to larger problems and shorten the lifespan of your weapon. From red rust to notches along the edge of the blade, if you don’t see to the small things regularly, the damage can add up over time.

That’s why we’ve created a new deluxe swordcare kit, to help you take protect your sword as well as it protects you. The most comprehensive kit currently on the market, it contains everything you need to combat tarnishing, rust, burrs and notches – as well as a 20 page guide to solving common swordcare problems.

Our care kits are available for £25 plus postage. Scroll down to order yours now.

All About Available Now

∴ What is our Available Now page? ∴

If you’ve browsed our site before, chances are you’ve seen our “Available Now” page, where we list one-of-a-kind Balefire swords available to buy on a first-come-first-served basis.

While we operate almost exclusively as a bespoke artisan forge, we set up this page for the rare occasions when we need to rehome orphaned swords after last-minute cancellations, or when we have enough spare parts in the workshop to make up a unique “frankensword”.

As our first priority is always our waiting list, this page hasn’t been particularly active – until now.

Forging On: How the Waiting List Works

∴ Lessons From Time∴

As we roll into a new year, we can’t help but reflect on the last one – and on how the international ups and downs of Covid and Brexit have affected our business. However, the unprecedented uncertainty of the past year has inspired us to revisit our waiting list, which has certainly been pushed about more than we anticipated this year. In striving to maintain transparent communication with our customers, we’re rethinking how the waiting list can best serve us – and you.

So You Want a Custom Sword?

As a swordsmith, I spend a lot of time poring over auction catalogues and museum pieces for inspiration. So much so that I sometimes forget that other people may not have quite so obsessive a grasp of sword form as my profession has provided me. With that in mind, I’ve taken some time away from the anvil to create a guide to commissioning a custom sword from me.

There are two types of briefs that I love: the truly open ones, where a client has a general idea of the type of sword they want, but trusts me to make specific and stylistic decisions for them, and the well-thought out ones, in which I get to work closely with a client to realise their own vision.

If you’re the former kind of client, you can feel confident that I have an arsenal of resources and experience to draw from in creating a one-of-a-kind sword that you’ll love fencing with. If you have more particular requirements, however, the following may help you to set them out in an email.

Care and Feeding of your Balefire Blade

When I think of epic tales of heroism, it’s not just the heat of the battlefield that gets my heart racing – it’s the aftermath. The crackling of a campfire and the lugubrious hum of a wooden whistle, scarred heroes trading tales over dark ale – and the methodical, meditative polishing of swords.

In the old tales, this is a moment of quiet, pragmatic reverence. An act of thanksgiving to the weapon that saved your life today. An act of preparation for the battle that awaits tomorrow. While wiping down your blade in front of the TV after class holds a little less romance, it’s still worth doing properly – to cement that bond with your sword, and to keep it in tip top condition for future bouts.
